How to Fix a Jammed Garbage Disposal

Sometimes, unexpected items—like a spoon, a coin, or even a small plastic toy—end up in your garbage disposal. When this happens, the motor might start, but you’ll only hear a humming sound because the blades aren’t turning. In some cases, the unit may shut off entirely via the built-in circuit breaker to prevent motor damage.

Steps to Unclog a Jammed Garbage Disposal

Before working on your garbage disposal, make sure to turn off the power. This can be done by flipping the switch or unplugging the disposal, especially if it’s connected directly under the sink. Never take chances with this powerful and noisy appliance, as it has sharp blades that can cause injury.

Once the power is off, use a flashlight to check for any visible objects causing the jam. If there’s a large item stuck, use tongs, tweezers, or—if you’re certain the power is off—your hand to carefully remove it.

For smaller objects, try placing ice cubes in the disposal, followed by a stream of cold water. Afterward, press the reset button, restore power, and try running the unit again.

If the jam remains unclear, you may need to manually turn the grinding mechanism.

Manual Release Methods

Many modern garbage disposal models feature a small hexagonal slot at the base, which can be turned with an Allen wrench. If you’re lucky, the wrench may be stored under the sink or even taped to the unit.

For older models without the hex slot, a broom handle can be used to free the grinding blades. Insert the handle into the disposal, press the end against the blades, and gently rotate it clockwise and then counterclockwise until the blades begin to move.

Once the obstruction is removed, restore power to the disposal, turn it on, and run water through the unit while it’s in use.

Always exercise caution when working with garbage disposals, as they operate under electrical power and have sharp components.
