How to Fix Low Water Pressure

Low Water Pressure

Old houses with low water pressure can be at a higher risk of developing more serious plumbing problems, but new houses can have the issue too. Low pressure can happen slowly over time or overnight, depending on the cause of the problem. If left alone, low water pressure can result in annoying problems or serious leaks.

What Causes Low Pressure

There are a few possible causes of low water pressure. If your neighbors are also affected by low pressure, your water company may have a main water break. This can be a serious issue, but it’s fairly common—call your utility service, and they will repair it as quickly as possible.

However, if you are the only one affected, you could have a disaster waiting to happen. Water leaks can inflict similar damage to flooding resulting in thousands lost if not caught in time. Sediment buildup is another common cause that can result in low water pressure and result in breaking pipes.

How to Solve Low Pressure

Finding what is wrong and where is usually the hardest part when attempting to solve any plumbing problem. To start, if you have a water meter, make a note of where it is before turning off all of your taps, showers, and any other water sources in your house for a few hours. If there was a change in the meter, you likely have a leak. You should turn off the water to your house and call a plumber as soon as possible to prevent serious damage. A leak inside a wall can be challenging to find if you aren’t familiar with the process.

If you believe buildup is the issue, unscrew any tap or shower heads before cleaning them. If you notice a significant improvement after they are cleaned, it’s likely sediment buildup that resulted in your low-pressure issues. A filtration device set up somewhere early in your plumbing system can prevent further sediment buildup.
