Tips to troubleshoot common heating system problem

Hot-water systems have a reset button on the water circulator pump; press it, says your most referred plumbing of Littleton specialist.

If your system has a pressure-regulating valve to automatically maintain the correct water pressure, check the gauge on the boiler.  If pressure is below the minimum mark, call your local Littleton plumber for service.

Plumbing Pro Tip of the Week

Tip #1  If the expansion tank feels hot all over and water spurts from the pressure relief valve, the tank needs recharging with air.

Tip #2  If some of your radiators fail to heat, they have air trapped inside.  Open the valve on the end of the radiator.  When water spurts out (it will be very hot), quickly close the valve.

Tip #3  Is the water at the half mark in the boiler’s sight glass?  If not and your boiler lacks an automatic water-feed valve, fill it using the manual water-feed, after the boiler has cooled (cold water could cause a hot boiler to crack).

Tip #4  Open the try cocks; steam should issue from the top one, warm water from the bottom.

PLUMBING TRADE SECRETS:  Sediment can interfere with the boiler’s operation.  If you haven’t drained the low-water cutoff valve recently, put a pail under the drain, and open the valve.  Careful, the water will be hot!  Fill the pail then refill the boiler.  If the water remains dirty, add a boiler-cleaning compound.
